Inspired by the book Kids Rule: Nickelodeon and Consumer Citizenship by Sarah Banet-Weiser, and the successful efforts by Dr. Allen Kanner and the nationally known coalition, Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, The Mothers Against Nickelodeon will screen The Media Education Foundation’s Film, “Consuming Kids” to celebrate the official launch of the organization. After the film, Dr. Kanner, who also published many books such as “Psychology and Consumer Culture” and “Ecopsychology”, will speak and host a panel of scholars including child advocates, educators, advertisers, and parents that will involve the audience in a discussionabout the terrifying realities behind media and children- specifically the American brand, Nickelodeon. Local child advocacy, service oriented, and childrens’ rights groups will host booths with information and hand outs. Dr. Kanner will also be selling copies of his titles.

Who: Students of business, marketing, communications, psychology, and a number of the social sciences as well as film and journalism, moms from all over Los Angeles and Orange County, media, the Orange County twitter community, child advocacy groups, and local business representatives.

What: The official launch of The Mothers Against Nickelodeon. The screening of The Media Education Foundation’s film, Consuming Kids. The first Orange County panel discussion hosted by Campaign for Commercial Free Childhood’s Dr. Allen Kanner. The public call to action to Boycott Nickelodeon.

Why: Because Nickelodeon is the number one kids brand in America and is the most manipulative and must be stopped. Immediately. Us Versus Them is the propoganda that in integrated in to every single Nickelodeon program. It is the reason kids turn away from parents, it is the reason parents battle the nag factor and it is the reason Nickelodeon makes $694 million on our kids.
